I then thought about giving feed back stating that it would be a good idea to have a status of the “auto align” on the import page – or even an override for that session that allowed the user to be aware of the fact that the auto align was on and could disable it for the import that was trying to be done? I then realised that it would be a complete waste of time as I would be greeted with either “it would confuse users” or “if enough people mention it we might do something about it”. Even on the import page there is no mention of this auto align. Yet another moment of ” Easy when you know how” The shocking thing is that Edgecam allows you to still populate the rotate XYZ fields with figures yet it never tells you that they will be ignored if auto align is on. The email that comes through is seen by all of us and we are in disbelief as no one knew of this “Auto align” setting (This is actually set on by default). However, if you wish it to be aligned as the CAD model is the you can switch off this option before you load the solid As you have the Align for Milling options on then Edgecam will try to align a straight edge down the X axis. The reason that this is happening is because Edgecam is Auto Aligning the part according to the options that you have set in Preferences. Support finally get back to us and state: Something so simple yet we are struggling so the only option left is to put a support case on and wait for them to get back to us. Well that is what we want to do but its not doing it!! The next hour is spent working out why Edgecam is not taking any notice of the figures put in the rotate model fields. “Rotate – Rotational translations of the part before insertion ” Hmmm – nothing has altered? Still the same!!Lets consult the help file. I simply looked at the part in Solidworks and selected the two faces and it told me that we needed to rotate the part 7 degrees when importing the model in Edgecam to put it in the correct position. This is great for items with flat edges that lie on the x or y plane but import something like that is shown below and it takes the angled face as the datum edge on the Y axis rather than what the model has in its native format.Ī quick check in Solidworks to make sure that the component is not modelled like aboveįirst of all I thought I would simply measure what angle Edgecam has bought the model in at – this cant be done simply and would involve having to draw lines on the part then measuring these lines and the angle of them, and then rotating the model back half of the amount from 180 degrees (Very time consuming for something so simple!). We were simply trying to import a model into Edgecam but unknown to us Edgecam has a “auto align ” feature that tries to be clever and align the part.

After consulting 3 of our people that have all been to Reading for the 4-5 day Milling training course non of them knew how to get round this one. This is the frustration that we find all too common. Two hours wasted just trying to import a solid model. I am quite surprised by the amount of people that have followed/viewed/replied to this blog in such a short space of time and I feel that it is only fair that Edgecam have a fair chance to reply and show us that things can improve for the day to day Edgecam users. Jim Swales has already replied to the Importing model problem to state that this has already been resolved in the 2016R1 release and along with a further proposed meeting to discuss improvement in making the user interface more intuitive, I am hopeful that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the issues that we had been facing and to discuss the frustrations that we encounter on a day to day basis.īoth Jim and Richard were very understanding to everything that was discussed along with a number of suggestions in making the user interaction being a much better experience.

Without going into too much detail I have recently had a lengthy meeting with the UK Edgecam sales Manager Jim Swales and the General Manager of Vero Software Richard Youhill.
